Middle-grade portal fantasy
Marion is currently seeking representation for Birdie Wonders a middle-grade portal fantasy featuring a neurodiverse heroine in a dystopian world. Read more about Birdie Wonders below.
Birdie Wonders feels like a constant disappointment to adults who want her to pay attention and hurry up. But Birdie notices things other people miss. Only Mrs. Bunbridge the bookshop owner appreciates how Birdie takes time to notice and imagine. But strange things are happening. Books vanish. On Halloween night, Mrs. Bunbridge herself starts to evaporate. The balance of imagination has tipped in the wrong direction. The only hope is to travel to a dark world called Wondernot. There, the balance of creativity might be restored. Without time to explain things to unimaginative adults, Birdie must travel to Wondernot alone. Her dog Kensington appears in human-like form with the grouchy bookstore cat. They guide her through the fantastical Hall of Stories to the bleak parallel world of Wondernot.
In Wondernot Birdie finds her life as it would be without creativity, stories, art, music, color, or play. Worst of all, Birdie’s classroom is now ruled by the mean school monitor Mrs. Martin. Recess has been replaced by Outside Exercise Period where the kids walk the track in uniform step. Stories have been replaced by Reading Monitors with endless Information Retention Questions. Even Birdie’s younger brother and her artistic best friend don’t know how to imagine. It’s up to Birdie to teach them to notice the world around them and to ask, “What if…?”
But as Birdie inspires her classmates, Mrs. Martin cracks down. Kids are forced to turn on one another to enforce the rules. As time runs out, Birdie herself starts to fade away. Inspiring creativity in others is not enough. Birdie must decide if she is brave enough to write her own story.
